April 2023 Update

Dear friends and neighbors,

Happy spring to all. We are getting ready to continue the construction of our Platte River Park.

As we mentioned before, we have so far constructed a beautiful, partially finished driveway from Indian Hill to what will become the entrance to the non-motorized trail and to where the kayak launch, the vault toilets and pavilion will be located. The trail will take us to the blueberry patch and two fishing ramps which should be fully functional sometime this upcoming summer.

As a matter of fact, the construction of the long anticipated kayak launch should be completed by the first week of June (or so) at which time, it will be fully functioning for paddlers. We will also have a fully functional rest room at the entrance.

We do have one challenge on our hands. Due to the two-year delay caused by the pandemic, we have a budget shortfall for constructing of the non-motorized trail and fishing ramps upstream from Indian Hill Rd. The bidding for this component was processed prior to the pandemic and now when we are ready to begin construction the price has gone up which puts us short.

We have contacted the Great Lakes Fisheries Trust who is funding the project and they may come up with some funds to close the gap once we have reached out to other funders and to the community at large. For this, we have, at the writing of this message, raised $10,000 from Honor State Bank and $5,000 from the Oleson Foundation and we are pursuing other as well. We will, however need to show support from our friends and neighbors as well.

So, with this in mind, we are asking for help to close this budget shortfall so that we can complete this phase of the project this year. Please consider donating to our cause. 100% of any such donation goes straight to the Platte River Park project. You can do that by visiting our website or you can also send a check to Honor Area Restoration Project, P.O. Box 123, Honor, MI 49640. Any amount is welcome.

Also, please note that HARP continues to hold regular monthly meetings, but we have changed the day to every first Monday of every month at 6 pm at the Homestead Township Hall by the fire station. As always, we welcome anyone to participate.

Sincerely,

HARP volunteer board: Ingemar Johansson, Bruce Wildie, Bill Ward, Paul Schulte, Lori Malmstrom, Peter Galopin, Bob Rosa, Randi Stoltz-Flynn, Heather Brushaber
