HARP began in 2010 when a group of neighbors got together to see what we could do to improve the lives of those living in the Honor area. Eventually we had a public forum that was attended by 150 neighbors who staked out the future of our effort. The streetscape of our town was in focus as was access to the river. Over the years since, the group has advocated for eliminating the blight in town resulting in the teardown of the infamous Question Mark Building on front street that was recently replaced by a new residential development. The group also addressed Maley Park where a boy scout group constructed a new walking bridge and the construction of a paved non-motorized trail in front of the shopping plaza. The Platte River Inn was reopened with a new owner, a sandwich shop was opened and a new owner reopened Sweets (formerly Lumberjack Bar).
Currently the group is working on establishing the Platte River Park just west of the village boundary. With significant support from a number of organizations and individual donors we were able to acquire the 52 acres and 1,550 ft of Platte River frontage that is now being developed into a public park with several features such as fishing ramps, kayak launch, picnic areas, playground, walking trails and more.
